Over the Moon (2011) is a musical play by Jodi Picoult and her son Jake van Leer, with additional collaboration from Ellen Wilber. The show features nineteen original songs and tells the story of Luna, who descends from the sky to a small town disguised as a boy. Luna sets out to help the townspeople find love but ends up tangled in a love triangle with Prince Jack and a girl named Felicity.
The play was designed for middle and high school performance, with a large cast, pop-culture references, and a cross-dressing narrator called the Hairy Godmother. It is lighter and more comedic than Picoult’s prose work, written to give school drama programs a fresh and energetic show.
