The Little Mabel books are Jilly Cooper’s foray into children’s picture books. Published between 1980 and 1985, the four titles follow the adventures of Little Mabel, a spirited young heroine. Starting with Little Mabel in 1980, the series continued with Little Mabel’s Great Escape, Little Mabel Wins, and Little Mabel Saves The Day.
These are a lesser-known part of Cooper’s output, written during the same period as her early nonfiction collections and just before the launch of the Rutshire Chronicles. They show a playful, family-friendly side of an author better known for her adult romances. The books are short, colorful, and aimed at young children.
