The Jig the Goblin series by Jim C. Hines flips the classic fantasy adventure on its head by telling the story from the monster’s point of view. Jig is a runt among goblins, armed with terrible eyesight and a fire-spider named Smudge, who keeps getting caught up in the kind of heroic quests that usually end badly for his kind.
Goblin Quest (2004) started the series, followed by Goblin Hero (2007), Goblin War (2008), and the short story collection Goblin Tales (2011). A German edition, Die Goblins, is also available. The series is funny and fast-paced, with a protagonist who survives not through strength or bravery but through cleverness and a healthy instinct for self-preservation.
