Jess Walter’s standalone novels are where his reputation really grew. The Financial Lives of the Poets (2009) is a darkly funny novel about a journalist whose life falls apart during the financial crisis. Beautiful Ruins (2012) became a bestseller with its story spanning from 1960s Italy to modern Hollywood.
The Cold Millions (2020) looks at early 20th-century labor struggles in Spokane, and So Far Gone (2025) is his most recent work. Each novel takes on a different slice of American life, and Walter brings a journalist’s eye for detail to all of them.
