Jennifer Steil’s standalone novels reflect her interest in cross-cultural experiences and the lives of people displaced by conflict. The Ambassador’s Wife (2015) is a thriller about a hostage crisis in a fictional Middle Eastern country, inspired in part by Steil’s own experiences abroad. The novel won the 2013 William Faulkner-William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition for Best Novel.
Exile Music (2020) follows a young Viennese girl whose family flees Nazi-occupied Austria and resettles in La Paz, Bolivia. The novel covers the family’s struggle to preserve their musical traditions while adapting to an unfamiliar land and culture.
