Hillier’s standalone novels cover a lot of ground thematically, but they share a preoccupation with what people do to protect themselves and what that protection eventually costs them. Wonderland is set against a decaying amusement park and has a slightly pulpier feel than the books that followed. Jar of Hearts marked a step change, with its dual-timeline structure and unflinching look at teenage complicity in murder.
Little Secrets (2020) follows a woman whose son disappears, only for her to discover her husband’s affair while searching for him. Things We Do in the Dark (2022) centres on a woman with a carefully constructed false identity whose past catches up with her. Each book works as a standalone, and you can read them in any order.
