The Jennie Redhead Mystery series is a departure from Sally Spencer’s Lancashire police procedurals. Set in Oxford rather than the industrial north, these three books follow a private investigator navigating the world of academia, old money, and closely guarded reputations. The first entry, The Shivering Turn, appeared in 2017, with the series concluding in 2020 with Daughters of Darkness.
Jennie Redhead is not a police officer, which gives these books a different feel from Spencer’s Woodend and Paniatowski novels. She has to rely on persuasion and persistence rather than a warrant card. The Oxford setting brings its own atmosphere of privilege and buried history, and Spencer uses it well. Fans of Spencer’s crime writing will find the same attention to character and place, even if the location has shifted from Lancashire pubs to college quads.
