Jason M. Hough’s standalone novels showcase his range outside of series fiction. Zero World (2015) is a spy thriller set against a science fiction backdrop, where an assassin who routinely has his memories wiped discovers a parallel version of Earth. The premise lets Hough play with questions about identity and memory while keeping the pace of an action novel.
Instinct (2021) moves in a different direction, exploring near-future technology and human behavior. Both books stand on their own and can be read without any knowledge of Hough’s other work, making them good entry points for readers curious about his writing style.
