The Jarnebring and Johansson series consists of The Dying Detective, published in 2010. The novel features retired detective Lars Martin Johansson, who suffers a stroke and finds himself confined to a hospital bed. When he learns about an unsolved murder of a young woman from 1985, he decides to investigate the case from his sickbed with the help of old colleagues.
The book is a meditation on aging, mortality, and the need for justice, wrapped inside a tightly plotted crime novel. Persson brings his characteristic insight into Swedish police culture and institutional failings, and the result is one of his most acclaimed works. It won the Best Swedish Crime Novel award from the Swedish Academy of Crime Writers.
