Thynne’s standalone work shows a writer willing to experiment with form and period. Her earliest novels, Patrimony and The Shell House, are literary fiction in the mode of the late 1990s, focused on character and family rather than plot mechanics. The Weighing of the Heart from 2010 is harder to categorize, drawing on Egyptian mythology.
The Words I Never Wrote, published in 2020, is closer to her Clara Vine work: a story told partly through letters discovered decades later, about sisters separated by the Second World War. Midnight in Vienna (2024) takes a more contemporary setting, following a journalist in the Austrian capital, which draws on Thynne’s own professional background as a foreign correspondent.
