The Jane Austen Mysteries is a 15-book series written by Francine Mathews under the pen name Stephanie Barron. The series imagines Jane Austen as an amateur detective, solving murders and mysteries in Regency-era England. The first book, Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor, was published in 1996.
The series ran for nearly three decades, concluding with Jane and the Final Mystery in 2023. Each book places Austen in a historically plausible setting and surrounds her with real people from her era. The mysteries are carefully researched and written in a style that echoes Austen’s own prose.
