James P. Hogan published five short story collections over a seventeen-year span. Minds, Machines & Evolution (1988) was the first, collecting stories from the early part of his career that deal with artificial intelligence, robotics, and the relationship between humans and technology. Star Child (1998) and Rockets, Redheads & Revolution (1999) followed in quick succession, the latter blending hard science fiction with Hogan’s characteristic dry humor and skepticism of authority.
Martian Knightlife (2001) collects stories set on Mars, imagining the social and practical problems of an established colony. Catastrophes, Chaos & Convolutions (2005) was his final collection, gathering stories that reflect his interest in unconventional scientific theories and his willingness to challenge mainstream assumptions. The collections give a good overview of how his interests developed over the decades.
