James P. Hogan wrote two non-fiction books that grew out of the same contrarian streak visible in his science fiction. Mind Matters (1998) deals with consciousness and the mind-body problem, arguing against purely materialist explanations and considering alternative theories about the nature of thought and awareness.
Kicking the Sacred Cow (2004) is more wide-ranging, taking on multiple areas where Hogan felt mainstream science had become dogmatic. He questioned aspects of Darwinian evolution, the HIV-AIDS connection, and Big Bang cosmology, among other topics. These positions made him controversial in the science fiction community, but they were consistent with the skepticism toward institutional authority that ran through his fiction as well.
