James Oliver Curwood’s 39 standalone novels are set almost entirely in the Canadian wilderness and northern frontier. Written between 1908 and 1928, they follow trappers, mounted police, gold hunters, and wilderness settlers through adventures in the vast, unforgiving North.
Notable titles include The Grizzly King (1915), a bear story that became the basis for the acclaimed 1988 film The Bear; The Courage of Marge O’Doone (1916); and Nomads of the North (1919). Many of these novels were adapted into early films, making Curwood one of the most-filmed authors of his era.
