James Lee Burke’s six standalone novels include his earliest work and several historical novels that stand apart from his series fiction. Half of Paradise (1965) and To the Bright and Shining Sun (1970) established his voice before the Robicheaux series began. The Lost Get-Back Boogie (1986), rejected over 100 times before publication, was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.
Two for Texas (1982) is a frontier adventure, White Doves at Morning (2002) is set during the Civil War, and Flags on the Bayou (2023) returned Burke to historical territory late in his career. Each standalone novel demonstrates the literary ambition that has always set Burke apart from genre conventions.
