James Howard Kunstler has written eleven standalone novels over a span of more than four decades, starting with The Wampanaki Tales in 1979. His early output was especially productive: six novels appeared between 1979 and 1987, including A Clown in the Moonlight, The Life of Byron Jaynes, An Embarrassment of Riches, Blood Solstice, and The Halloween Ball. Two more followed in 1988 with The Hunt and Thunder Island.
After a long gap, Kunstler returned to standalone fiction with Maggie Darling in 2003. A Safe and Happy Place came in 2017, and his most recent standalone novel, Look, I’m Gone, was published in 2025. Since each book is self-contained, readers can pick them up in any order.
