Sweet Marlene is James Finn Garner’s only standalone novel, published in 2002. It is a departure from the satirical fairy tales and clown mysteries that make up most of his catalog. The story follows two men who attempt to summon a demon to possess their friend Marlene Gable. Their plan works a little too well when they realize they have actually called forth the Whore of Babylon.
The book shows a different side of Garner’s humor. Where the Politically Correct books were built on wordplay and cultural commentary, Sweet Marlene goes for darker, wilder territory. It is a comic horror novel that combines supernatural elements with the kind of absurd situations Garner does best.
