These two short works from James Finn Garner extend his long-running project of rewriting classic stories through a comic lens. Tea Party Fairy Tales, published in 2012, applies Garner’s satirical approach to the political landscape of the time, reworking fairy tales with the rhetoric and concerns of the tea party movement. It uses the same format that made the Politically Correct Bedtime Stories a hit, but aims at a different target.
Politically Correct Pinocchio, published in 2018, returns to Garner’s original formula. It takes the story of the wooden puppet and gives it a thorough politically correct revision, more than two decades after the original Politically Correct Bedtime Stories first appeared. The gap between the two works shows how long the appetite for Garner’s particular brand of fairy tale parody has lasted.
