The James Bond novel series started in 1953 with Casino Royale and has never really stopped. Ian Fleming wrote fourteen Bond books before his death in 1964, establishing the character, the formula, and the tone. Cold War espionage, exotic locations, larger-than-life villains, and a protagonist who is equal parts sophistication and brutality.
After Fleming, the series passed through several hands. Kingsley Amis wrote one entry under a pseudonym. John Gardner took over in 1981 and wrote fourteen novels that updated Bond for the Thatcher and post-Cold War eras. Raymond Benson followed with six books that leaned harder into action. The 21st-century entries have been one-offs from literary authors: Sebastian Faulks, William Boyd, and Anthony Horowitz each brought their own style to the character.
The result is a series that spans seven decades and reads like a history of the thriller genre. Fleming’s originals are terse and mean. Gardner’s are more polished. The recent entries are self-consciously literary. What holds them together is Bond himself, a character flexible enough to absorb each author’s voice while remaining recognizable.
