The Jake Lassiter series follows a former professional football player who traded the gridiron for the courtroom. Jake Lassiter is a Miami trial lawyer with a knack for digging up the truth, even when it brings trouble along with it. The first novel, To Speak for the Dead, was named one of the best mysteries of the year by the Los Angeles Times when it was published in 1990, and the character was later adapted into a 1995 NBC TV movie produced by Stephen J. Cannell, with Gerald McRaney in the lead role.
The series spans more than three decades of publication, with Paul Levine writing Lassiter into increasingly complicated legal and moral situations across Miami. In Flesh and Bones, Lassiter defends a model accused of murdering her father. After a long break, Levine returned to the character in 2011, and the later books explore themes like wrongful accusations and the consequences of contact sports. In Early Grave, the most recent entry, Lassiter sues a school and the Florida High School Athletic Association after his godson suffers a catastrophic football injury.
