Max Allan Collins’ Jackie and Maggie Starr series is a three-book mystery series published between 2007 and 2013. The books feature a mother-daughter detective duo who solve murders connected to the world of comic books and comic strips. A Killing in Comics starts the series with a murder at a comic book company, Strip for Murder moves to the world of newspaper comic strips, and Seduction of the Innocent takes its name from Fredric Wertham’s infamous anti-comics book.
Collins is himself a longtime comic book and comic strip writer, having worked on Dick Tracy and Batman, among others. The Jackie and Maggie Starr books let him combine his mystery-writing skills with his insider knowledge of the comics industry. The books are set during the medium’s golden age and are filled with references that comics fans will appreciate. The mother-daughter dynamic adds a personal element to the mysteries, and Collins’ humor runs through all three entries.
