Jack Windrush is Malcolm Archibald’s long-running military adventure series, following a British army officer through the major conflicts of the 19th century. Starting with Windrush (2016) and the Crimean War, the series has expanded to twelve books covering the Indian Mutiny (Cry Havelock), Afghanistan (Farewell To Afghanistan), the Sudan, and Egypt.
The books are heavily researched and give a ground-level view of what it was like to serve in the Victorian British Army, with all the danger, boredom, and political incompetence that entailed. Windrush is an engaging protagonist who grows and changes as the series progresses through decades of imperial warfare.
