The J.W. Wells & Co. series begins with The Portable Door, in which Paul Carpenter stumbles into a job at what turns out to be a firm staffed by wizards, goblins, and supernatural beings. Each book follows a different employee or situation at the firm, mixing workplace comedy with magical chaos.
Holt’s humor comes from treating the magical world with the same bureaucratic dullness as any real office. Enchanted swords get filed under “miscellaneous,” and interdimensional portals cause HR paperwork. The series ran from 2003 to 2023, with The Eight Reindeer of the Apocalypse as the most recent entry.
