The J. W. Wells & Co. series by Tom Holt imagines a world where magic is real and handled by a London corporation that operates like any other business, complete with office politics, HR problems, and terrible coffee. Each book follows a different employee or client of the firm as they get tangled up in some magical mess.
Starting with The Portable Door (2003) and running through eight books to The Eight Reindeer of the Apocalypse (2023), the series is packed with wordplay, absurd situations, and clever twists on fantasy tropes. Titles like You Don’t Have to Be Evil to Work Here, But it Helps and May Contain Traces of Magic give a good sense of the series’ tone. The Portable Door was also adapted into a 2023 film.
