The Island series by Victoria Hislop is centered on the real Greek island of Spinalonga, which was used as a leper colony until 1957. The main novel, The Island (2005), became Hislop’s breakout hit and sold millions of copies worldwide. It tells the story of Alexis, a young woman who travels to Crete and uncovers her family’s long-hidden ties to the colony and the people who lived there.
The series also includes Island Escape, the Norwegian-language edition Oya, and the sequel One August Night (2020), which returns to the characters and setting years after the events of the original. The Island was adapted into a popular Greek television series called “To Nisi,” and it remains Hislop’s best-known work.
