The Iron Druid Chronicles follows Atticus O’Sullivan, a 2,100-year-old Irish Druid hiding in modern-day Tempe, Arizona. Atticus runs an occult bookshop and appears to be in his early twenties, but he’s the last of the ancient Druids and has spent centuries avoiding gods, demons, and other beings who want him dead.
The series blends Celtic mythology with a wide range of pantheons. Atticus interacts with gods from Norse, Greek, Roman, and Native American traditions, among others. His companions include Oberon, his Irish wolfhound who can communicate telepathically (and has strong opinions about sausages and French poodles), and later Granuaile, his apprentice who becomes a full Druid.
Kevin Hearne writes with a light, humorous tone that balances the darker elements of the story. Atticus is a wise-cracking protagonist who has lived through millennia of human history but maintains a modern sensibility. The action is fast-paced, the mythology is well-researched, and the pop culture references are plentiful.
