The Inspector Ian Rutledge series is a long-running historical mystery sequence set in 1920s England. Rutledge is a Scotland Yard detective who returned from the trenches of World War I with severe shell shock, manifested as the persistent voice of Hamish, a dead soldier who follows him through every case. A Test of Wills (1994) launched the series, which has grown to 34 books.
Charles Todd uses the post-war English countryside as a backdrop for mysteries that explore class tension, lingering wartime trauma, and the changing social order of the 1920s. Rutledge’s internal struggle with Hamish adds a psychological layer that sets the series apart from traditional whodunits, making each investigation as much about the detective’s own demons as the crime at hand.
