Inspector Crewe is a Scotland Yard detective who appears in two of Arthur J. Rees’s earliest mystery novels. The Hampstead Mystery (1916) involves the murder of a retired judge found dead in his home, while The Mystery of the Downs (1918) takes the inspector to the English countryside to investigate a body discovered on the chalk downs.
These two novels established Rees as a mystery writer and helped set the template for his later detective fiction. Both books feature the methodical police procedural approach that was common in British mystery fiction of the period.
