The Inspector Anita Sundstrom series follows a Swedish police detective investigating murders in Malmö, Sweden’s third-largest city. The books have a consistent structure: a body turns up, Anita and her colleagues work the case, and the investigation takes her through the city’s neighborhoods, from the immigrant quarters to the waterfront apartments. Each title uses alliterative Malmö naming (Meet Me, Murder, Missing, Midnight, Menace, Malice, Mourning, Mammon, Mission, Myth) with one exception (A Malmö Midwinter, a shorter novella).
Torquil MacLeod writes from direct knowledge of Malmö, drawn from years of visiting his son there and his friendships with local police. The series fits the Nordic noir tradition but has a lighter touch than Mankell or Larsson, with more focus on character and setting than on graphic violence.
