The Insanity series is Cameron Jace’s longest and best-known work. Eleven books published between 2013 and 2023 reimagine Alice in Wonderland as a psychological thriller set partly in an asylum and partly in a version of Wonderland that would give Lewis Carroll nightmares. The central question — is Alice insane, or is Wonderland real? — carries the series through escalating encounters with twisted versions of Carroll’s characters.
Each book title pulls from the Wonderland mythology: Figment, Circus, Hookah, Wonder, Mushrooms, Looking Glass, Rabbit Hole. The Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, and the Queen of Hearts all appear in forms that range from menacing to terrifying. Jace treats Carroll’s source material as a framework for horror rather than whimsy, and the asylum setting grounds the fantasy in a reality that makes the Wonderland sequences hit harder.
