The Imperium series by Jody Lynn Nye is set in a far-future galactic empire and follows Lord Thomas Kinago, a well-meaning aristocrat with a love of photography and a talent for stumbling into trouble. The core trilogy consists of The View from the Imperium (2011), Fortunes of the Imperium (2014), and Rhythm of the Imperium (2015), all published by Baen Books.
Thomas is an unlikely hero. He is wealthy, image-obsessed, and at times oblivious, but he has a genuine desire to do the right thing. Each novel sends him on a new assignment for the Imperium’s intelligence service, where his social skills and cheerful persistence turn out to be surprisingly useful. Nye plays the contrast between Thomas’s upper-class manners and the dangerous situations he lands in for both comedy and real stakes.
The series blends space opera with a lighthearted tone that sets it apart from more serious military science fiction. Readers who enjoy humor mixed with their interstellar politics will find a lot to like here.
