Ian Whates’ anthology editing represents a major part of his contribution to genre fiction. Through NewCon Press and other publishers, he has assembled collections covering nearly every corner of speculative fiction: alternate history (The Mammoth Book of Alternate Histories), military SF (The Mammoth Book of SF Wars), noir (Noir), fairy tales (La Femme), and many more.
Notable volumes include the Solaris Rising series, Paradox: Stories Inspired by the Fermi Paradox, and Legends: Stories in Honour of David Gemmell. Whates has a talent for finding strong themes and matching them with the right authors. His anthologies are a significant presence in British genre publishing and have introduced many readers to new writers.
