The Hunter Trilogy is a departure from David Wood’s usual adventure thriller territory. Instead of globe-trotting treasure hunts, this series tells the story of wolves on the American frontier and the people whose lives intersect with theirs. Legend introduces a lone wolf whose presence forces both hunters and would-be protectors to confront what the animal means to them. Hunter and Guardian continue the saga through decades of human-wolf conflict in 1960s Minnesota.
The books blend animal narrative with human drama. Wood draws on themes of survival, the wild, and the slow disappearance of wolves from the American wilderness as bounty hunters and government programs push the species toward extinction. It is a quieter, more reflective series than his Dane Maddock books, and it shows range from an author mostly known for action-packed thrillers.
