The Hunter Buchanon series puts its hero in the Black Hills of Dakota Territory, one of the more dramatic settings in the Johnstone lineup. Hunter Buchanon is a big, capable frontiersman who lives by his own rules in a place where the law is thin and the land is unforgiving. The first book, The Black Hills, establishes the character and his world in 2018.
Blood in the Dust and Hunter’s Moon continue the story through 2021, each dropping Buchanon into a new conflict. The Black Hills setting gives the books a different flavor from the flat-plains Westerns. There are deep forests, rocky ridgelines, and isolated homesteads, and the dangers come from both human enemies and the wild country itself. At three books, the series is a quick read that makes good use of its location.
