House Immortal imagines a near-future Earth where eleven rival Houses control every resource — food, water, energy, medicine — and the people caught between them have very limited options. Matilda Case has managed to stay outside the system, running a small farm and protecting a community of people the Houses would otherwise own. She can also stitch the dead back to something like life, a skill she has kept secret. When events force her hand, she discovers that her ability extends further than she knew and that every House on Earth wants to use it.
The trilogy — House Immortal (2014), Infinity Bell (2015), Crucible Zero (2015) — moves fast through the political and physical landscape of this divided future, with Monk bringing the same mechanical precision to her science fiction that she brings to her urban fantasy magic systems. The three books were published within two years, making the trilogy easy to read as a single continuous story.
