The Honour series by Gavin Lyall is set in Edwardian Britain in the years before World War I. Captain Matthew Ranklin is an artillery officer demoted in rank and recruited into the newly formed Secret Service Bureau, the forerunner of MI5 and MI6. He is partnered with Conall O’Gilroy, a former Irish terrorist.
The four books, published between 1993 and 2000, follow Ranklin’s operations across Europe as the political tensions that will lead to the Great War slowly build. The series marked a shift for Lyall from Cold War thrillers to historical espionage fiction.
