Holly Goldberg Sloan writes children’s fiction with a focus on resilience and unlikely connections. Counting by 7s, her best-known novel, follows Willow Chance, a highly gifted girl who must rebuild her life after a devastating loss. The book has been widely adopted in schools and reading programs. Short, published in 2017, follows a girl cast in a production of The Wizard of Oz who navigates the ups and downs of community theater.
Sloan’s other works include Appleblossom the Possum, a story told from the perspective of a baby possum, and The Elephant in the Room, about a boy dealing with his mother’s absence. To Night Owl from Dogfish, co-written with Meg Wolitzer, tells its story through emails between two girls who discover their fathers are dating. Her books consistently feature young protagonists who find strength in unusual circumstances.
