The Holdfast Chronicles is one of the most significant feminist science fiction series of the twentieth century. Walk to the End of the World (1974) introduces Holdfast, a post-apocalyptic enclave where men rule and women are treated as subhuman. Motherlines (1978) shifts perspective to the free women who live outside Holdfast in horse-based nomadic societies.
After a sixteen-year gap, The Furies (1994) and The Conqueror’s Child (1999) returned to the series, bringing the free women and the slaves into direct confrontation. The series explores power, gender, freedom, and what it takes to rebuild a society after generations of oppression.
