The Hogarth Shakespeare series is a multi-author project in which contemporary novelists retell Shakespeare’s plays. Margaret Atwood contributed Hag-Seed (2016), a retelling of The Tempest set in a modern-day Canadian prison theater program. Other authors in the series include Howard Jacobson (Shylock is My Name) and Anne Tyler (Vinegar Girl).
The series ran from 2015 to 2018, with each book offering a different author’s interpretation of a Shakespeare play. The books stand alone as contemporary novels while engaging with their source plays.
