H.G. Wells was one of the great short story writers in the English language, and many of his stories have been reprinted individually as standalone publications over the years. This list covers those individual editions, separate from the collected volumes and anthologies where they also appear.
Wells wrote short fiction throughout his career, but his best-known stories date from the 1890s and early 1900s. The Chronic Argonauts (1888) was his first published fiction and contained the seeds of The Time Machine. Stories like The Plattner Story, The Star, The Crystal Egg, and The Door in the Wall show Wells working at the peak of his imaginative powers, turning strange premises into deeply felt stories about human nature.
Many of these stories have been reissued in new standalone editions in recent years, which accounts for the modern publication dates on some entries. The stories themselves were written in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Wells estimated that he wrote over a hundred short stories during his lifetime, and these individually published editions represent some of the most popular among them.
