The Heroes of the Undead series is set in a world where geneticist Daniel Magnus deliberately releases a virus that turns people into fast-moving zombies. The first book, The Culling, begins when Bryce Carter and Maddy Whitmore refuse to join Magnus’s plan to “perfect” the human race by eliminating those he considers unworthy. After their refusal, they are injected with a mysterious serum that gives them heightened mental and physical abilities.
What makes this series different from Peter Meredith’s earlier Undead World books is the addition of intelligent demons who can organize and direct the zombie hordes. The survivors face threats from both the mindless undead and these calculating creatures. The story is set primarily in New York City during the early days of the apocalypse, with the action moving quickly as Bryce and Maddy try to stay alive and fight back against Magnus’s engineered catastrophe.
