Heroes of Dune is a series by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson that fills in the spaces between Frank Herbert’s original novels. Paul of Dune (2008) is set between Dune and Dune Messiah, exploring what happened during Paul Atreides’ early reign. The Winds of Dune (2009) picks up after the events of Dune Messiah, and Princess of Dune (2023) adds another chapter to the story.
The “interquel” approach gives these books a specific role in the larger Dune timeline. Rather than pushing the story further into the future or past, they flesh out periods that Frank Herbert skipped over, answering questions that readers of the original novels may have wondered about for decades.
