The Henry Malone series features a former Marine working as a private investigator in West Virginia. Starting with She Talks to Angels (2018), which won the Shamus Award for Best First PI Novel, the series follows Malone through cases that draw him into the darker corners of Appalachian life. The book titles reference classic rock and country songs, including Friend of the Devil, Behind the Wall of Sleep, and Because the Night.
Hannah writes Malone as a complicated protagonist dealing with the aftereffects of military service while trying to do right in a region with its own particular tensions. The West Virginia setting gives the series a distinctive atmosphere that sets it apart from urban PI fiction.
