The Henry Johnstone Mystery series takes place in 1920s England, a period of social change after the First World War. Henry Johnstone is a Detective Chief Inspector at Scotland Yard who travels to various locations across England to solve murders, often accompanied by his trusted sergeant, Mickey Hitchens. The pair make a good team, with Johnstone’s thoughtful approach balanced by Mickey’s practical know-how.
Adams started the series in 2017 with The Murder Book and has published ten books through 2024. The historical setting is well researched, and the books capture the mood of post-war Britain without getting bogged down in period detail. Each novel works as a standalone mystery while also developing the ongoing relationship between Henry and Mickey.
