The Weight of Silence introduced her focus on missing children and family secrets in rural communities. Later books expanded her range while keeping the same emotional intensity. These Things Hidden dealt with a teenager’s return home after a prison sentence, while Missing Pieces followed a woman who discovers her husband’s past is not what she believed.
Her more recent novels have grown darker in their premises. The Overnight Guest puts a true crime writer in an isolated farmhouse during a blizzard, where she discovers a child hidden in the house. Everyone Is Watching drops contestants into a reality TV competition that turns lethal. The Perfect Hosts, her 2025 release, continues her pattern of taking familiar domestic situations and twisting them into something menacing.
