Heart of Dread is set in a future where environmental catastrophe has frozen most of the world. Natasha, a young woman with forbidden magical abilities, escapes her servitude and seeks passage to the legendary Blue, a rumored paradise beyond the ice.

Co-written by Melissa De La Cruz and her husband Michael Johnston, the trilogy combines post-apocalyptic survival with fantasy elements drawn from various mythologies. The frozen wastelands hide dangers both human and supernatural, and Natasha must navigate both to reach safety.

The series builds from a desperate escape in Frozen through increasingly complex revelations about the world and Natasha’s own powers, concluding with Golden’s final confrontation between the forces that destroyed the old world and those trying to build something new.
