Harry Turtledove’s individually published short stories and novellas include some of his most acclaimed work. Down in the Bottomlands, published in Analog in 1993, won the Hugo Award and is set in a world where the Mediterranean Sea dried up millions of years ago. Must and Shall (1995) imagines a much harsher Reconstruction after the Civil War.
These shorter works span from 1993 to 2020 and cover the full range of his interests: alternate history, science fiction, and speculative what-ifs. Many of them were later collected in his anthologies, but were first published as standalone pieces in magazines.
