Folding Beijing is Hao Jingfang’s most celebrated short work and the story that brought her to international attention. The novelette imagines a future Beijing that physically folds to accommodate three separate societies living in the same space on different time schedules. A waste worker from Third Space risks crossing into the wealthier First and Second Spaces to deliver a message, exposing the stark inequalities built into the city’s architecture.
The story won the 2016 Hugo Award for Best Novelette, translated into English by Ken Liu and published in Uncanny Magazine. It remains one of the most widely read works of Chinese science fiction in English.
