Ben Kane’s Hannibal series is his most extensive treatment of ancient warfare, spanning eleven entries that cover the Second Punic War between Carthage and Rome. The series follows Hannibal Barca’s legendary crossing of the Alps and invasion of Italy, telling the story from both Carthaginian and Roman perspectives. Kane walked Hannibal’s Alpine route himself as part of his research.
The series includes full novels, shorter pieces like The Patrol, and translations. Enemy of Rome and Fields of Blood cover the war’s opening campaigns, while Clouds of War follows the conflict through its middle years. The later entries overlap with Kane’s Richard the Lionheart books, creating connections across different historical periods.
