The Hanne Wilhelmsen series is Anne Holt’s longest and most well-known work, running from Blind Goddess (1993) through Det ellevte manus (2022). Hanne is a detective in the Oslo police force whose cases grow in complexity over seventeen books while her personal life undergoes significant changes.
The series is notable for its long timeline, allowing Holt to show how both the character and Norwegian society evolve over nearly thirty years. 1222 (2007), set in a snowbound hotel after a train crash, is often cited as one of the series’ high points. Later entries like In Dust and Ashes (2016) deal with the accumulated weight of decades spent in law enforcement.
